History

Our History is a long and interesting one.  With land purchases in 1873 by Mr. Charles C. Sanderson, a local Sunday school was formed in Sanderson Hall in the section of Dedham called Oakdale, sponsored by Mr. And Mrs. Horatio Chickering of Dedham.  This Sunday school was formed for the inspiration and comfort of the people who felt themselves a long way from St. Paul’s Church, Dedham.  Thus, was formed a new Episcopal Church, where Christ’s children might be fed.  Within three weeks after the first Sunday school, the fame of the Mission had so spread that about 100 people were present.  So it has continued for 133 years in “The Church of the Good Shepherd,”  named by the founders (Mrs. Andrew A. Wheeler), as an appropriate  name for a Church built for a people who had no pastor and no shepherd.  The cornerstone of the present Church was laid on June 8, 1876 .  The original carpet of light red led the eye directly to the robe in the figure of the Good Shepherd in the Memorial window.   The Church and Rectory were painted red with green trimmings.  This was done originally in 1893.
